Knowledge Day
Knowledge Day (more often called as simply as 1st of September) is a country wide holiday marking the end of Summer school holidays and the beginning of new Academic Year, which is 9 months long in Latvia.

How lovely. I remember the charming pictures of then Soviet school girls with big bows in their hair from the 60's. It's so nice to make the day special for the children & families. In our schools in the primary grades, parents come to school the first day & have to leave the kids at the classroom door - the teacher says "See you later", and closes the door.
