There is still a lot of Water Towers in Riga. Almost all of them look the same as this one in Pardaugava area. Water tank is on top, and should be built higher than any building around to provide water supply. See also the same towers in Riga center.
Riga river Daugava is ice unbounded now :) There is a couple sitting on the stone footsteps. It is a true love if they are sitting there during such cold days. On Background you can see Railway Bridge, which is awesome decorated during nights.
Hotel Latvia (Latvija) in Riga is very modern and tall building making the landscape of Riga. Panoramic view on top is open to everybody. Look example towards Riga Center. See also Hotel Latvija during Day time.
Replica of the Blackheads House in Riga was built in 1999. Original building was destroyed by Nazi aircraft during Second World War. In front of Blackheads House is statue of Roland. In Riga Central Market typical buyers are old people, who still think that on markets everything is much cheaper and better. That was before, but now in many cases market goods (especially clothes) are lower quality and sometime cost even more than in shops.
Fountain in front of Latvijas Nacionālā Opera (Latvian National Opera) During the winter it is not working, of course :) Check also another view of Riga Opera.
This building belongs to Stockholm School of Economics in Riga. It is one of the best universities in Riga. The building is also very nice and resembles Blue House a bit :)
Jurmala (Jūrmala means seaside in Latvian) is Riga satellite town and summer resort area. This is main road from Riga to Jūrmala named as Kārļa Ulmaņa gatve. Photo was taken in winter time, when my plane was coming in the land, Riga Airport :)
At such cold days in Riga, very few people are going out. And nobody is riding on the carrousel in Old Riga :( Did you know that all carrousels in Riga always go clockwise? For example in US carrousels usually go counter-clockwise :)
One of the tallest structures in Riga is this transmission equipment tower over Daugava River located close to river mouth. (Daugava Crossing Pylon) There are two such Pylons, on both sides of river. Pylons really tall enough (110 meters), to allow big ships to go under wires.
This building in the middle of Historical center of Riga irritate many people in Riga. This black box is the Museum of the Occupation of Latvia. Instead of removing it, government decide to expand it in the immediate future.
Despite its big size, this building is out of use. It is ex-building of Press agencies in Riga. Last 2-3 years it isn't used anymore, so it is just awaiting for demolition :( For now this is the one of the tallest buildings in Riga, and it's located next to Saules Akmens building.
Maybe the title of this photo does sound strange, but Russians and one's family nations celebrate today Old New Year. Sometimes foreigners call this holiday as Russian New Year. Old New Year it is just meta phrase from Russian Старый Новый год. It is celebrated because Russia has changed official calendar from Julian to Gregorian less than 100 years ago. So, many Russian people, including those who live in Riga, celebrate New Year twice, by Gregorian and by Julian calendar.
Riga suburbs don't have any significant sights and all of them look pretty similar. On this picture you can see the heart of Purvciems neighbourhood in Riga - Mēbeļu Nams (Furniture House) It is a biggest Furniture store in Riga, built in the middle of 80's.
One of the tallest buildings in Riga is Academy of Sciences building. Built right after Second World War, during Soviet age. Academy was the highest building in Riga for more than 50 years, before Hansabanka Skyscraper was built.
When somebody is getting married they should put a lock on bridge by tradition. This tradition means that their union will be strong as the lock they have put. This small bridge in Riga Center Park get filled with locks every several months.
Sometimes Riga people can see lasers drawing something in the night sky. Usually, it is advertisement of some Riga club, in this case Essential club. This one is scanning sky, like radars scan all around them.

Riga Airport is also hub for airBaltic, Latvian National Airline. RIX located 12 km from Riga Center, basically in Marupe district.
