Mārupe (Mara's river) is one of the Riga's satellite towns, located at the south-west border, next to Airport. Town was founded in 1925 and named after river of almost the same name Nowadays Marupe has reputation as an area for families with mid-high income. Total population is 5,500 people. Also it is one of the most fast growing towns in Latvia, total population has been increased more than in 3 times for the last 10 years.
Riga Fashion Week is a seasonal fashion show of the leading Baltic and international designers. Concentration of alternative and other bohemian people usually is being held in Hotel Latvia.
Crystal Club is located on Lacplesa iela, in place of former cinema Kino 52. Since the opening in 2008 it's gaining some popularity among people from high society, mostly Russians. Despite free entrance, all Crystal's visitors look fancy and glamorous.
Anti-Aircraft defense base is located in Marupe. It has some strange constructions and of course radars. It was built during Soviet times in order to protect airspace over Riga and surroundings. Taking close-up pictures is forbidden because the military base is still operating.

I guess this season's last game of Dinamo Riga at home was finished some minutes ago. Dinamo managed to get into KHL Play-off and won the strongest team SKA Saint Petersburg in eighth-finals. In quarter-finals we faced MVD Balashikha, and the current series' score is 1:3, which means nearly end for us. In any case it was a brilliant season for Riga Dinamo. Next KHL season will be even more interesting with new teams, new countries. Good Luck Dinamo!
Pavilions of Central Market is remarkable sight of Riga since the market grand opening in 1930. The famous urban legend says that these pavilions were used as hangars for dirigibles before. In fact they were built using reinforcing steel, which were only designed for hangars, but never used so. Nowadays Riga Market is the biggest in Europe and has been declared as UNESCO World Heritage Site. On the picture are 2 of 5 market's hangars - vegetable and fish pavilion.
Храм Преображения Господня or Kristus apskaidrošanas pareizticīgo baznīca (Orthodox Church of Transfiguration) is located on the border between Sarkandaugava and Mezaparks neighbourhoods.
Church of Transfiguration was built in 1890 in the place of former multi-religious church for Catholics (moved to King's Church in 1942), Lutherans (moved to Trinity church) and Orthodox (stayed here).
Colonnade is a nightclub in Riga. It is located on Dzirnavu iela, just next to Hotel Latvia and Essential club. It was opened in 2008, just after fire in La rocca, therefore a lot of "party people" moved to Colonnade. Despite free entrance, good location and good house/dance music, Colonnade didn't become one of the most popular Riga clubs.
Bowlero is an entertainment complex next to Spice Shopping Mall. It was opened in 2002. Bowlero is has more than 20 bowling alleys, billiard aka pool tables, restaurant and even playground for kids.
Arēna Rīga (Arena Riga) is the biggest indoor venue in Riga. The total capacity is 15,000 visitors. It was built in 2006 as main arena for Ice Hockey World Championship. Now it is permanent home for several hockey and basketball teams, including Riga Dinamo, ASK Riga, Barons LMT. It also the main arena for huge concerts and music events like Sensation White.
Ryanair Boeing is being refueled by an aviation fuel truck Mercedes-Benz while passengers are boarding. No time to waste. 89% of Ryanair's flights are on-time! I guess the rest 11% are simply canceled flights :)
Pleskodāles Kapi (Pleskodale Cemetery) was established by Martina baznica in 1881 as result of tension with Sveta Jana Baznica for the right to perform requiem service. Before 1881 Marina baznica didn't have that right in order to keep high profit of Sveta Jana Baznica. The cemetery is still active and performing burial of Lutheran and Catholic believers. The procedure's price is not less than 1000 EUR per body and may rise up to several thousands. The picture was taken today after heavy snowfall this morning. It is still winter in Riga.
Mārupes ūdenstornis (Marupe Water tower) was built in 2002. The tower's height is 58 meters, hence it is the most tallest building in Marupe. Shortly after being built the Water tower became the most recognizable reference point in the whole area.
Rīgas Mateja baptistu baznīca (Riga St. Matthew Baptist Church) is one of 83 Baptist churches in Latvia. Baptist movement is a relatively old branch from Anglican Church. Interesting fact is that Baptists churches are very autonomous and decentralized, hence they differ widely from one another in what they believe. The only common custom for all baptists is that believer get baptized only in adult age and because of its own will. The building itself was built in 1902 on Matthew street in neo-romanticism architecture style.
La Rocca is the biggest and one of the most famous night clubs in Riga. It is located on Brivibas iela. La Rocca was opened in 2000 in the building of former Operetta Theatre. In 2007 La Rocca was on fire, but since the end of 2008 La Rocca is open again. La Rocca consists of 3 dance floors Red Square, RnB Bar and Main arena with different music styles. Also it shares the same roof with Studio 69 and many other entertainment facilities. Although you can visit it for additional entrance fee. Regular LaRocca visitor's age is between 16 and 21, hence prices in bar are relatively low if we compare them to other Riga places. The main disadvantage of La Rocca is the fierce security guards and distance from other night clubs.
Updated: Larocca club is closed down. Since December 2010 club Rai is located here.
Last night Armin van Buuren had live performance in Essential Club Riga. It was already his 4th visit in Riga. Thanks to his own unique project A State of Trance his popularity is growing drastically in the recent years, therefore Armin is said to be DJ #1 in the world 3 years in a row. 5 years passed since monsieur Eric Tenin started his Paris Daily Photo, the very first City Daily Photo blog. In fact I was inspired not only by Paris, but also by Brain's New York, which was started on 17 March 2006. Elefant Hotel is located on the way to Riga Airport, on Lielirbes iela. It is located next to Panorama Plaza buildings and promoted in the same way as the middle point between the Riga International Airport and Old Town. It was opened in 2007, but still looks quite empty. Can anybody give a short review on it? :)
I have never thought that removing icicles and cleaning roofs from the snow is so important procedure. This year my flat on the last floor get flooded because of the rapidly melted ice and snow. And the insurance company says it's not their case . P.S. Check the angry guy on the most-left photo ;)
Klostera iela (Monastery street) is 180 meters long street in Old Town, lying next to Latvian Parliament. During the last century this street had different names like Muzeju iela and Vestures iela. Klostera street is also address of Magdalene's Church
The main Cinema in Riga is Forum cinemas, which is located on the street of 13th January. Cinema was opened in 2003 as the most advanced cinema in Eastern Europe. 14 movie halls, new technologies, world premiers and perfect location lead to the closure of almost all other Riga cinemas.
Yesterday almost a half of Riga inhabitants were without water supply, because of a catastrophic pipe leak near Brasa Railway station. Railway tracks were covered with 40cm (1,3 feet) water layer and looked more like a water channel or a small river.
Rammstein concert is being held today in Arena Riga. An unique show was performed by world famous Band originally coming from East Germany. Rammstein become successful for its sharp and aggressive lyrics. Despite Rammstein is mainstream now, it still could be considered as alternative music.
Brīvības gatve (Freedom Highroad) is the continuation of Brivibas street, which starts at Sport's Academy, runs along Smerla forest, Jugla neighborhood and terminates at Riga's border towards Sigulda town. Before Riga's borders extension in 1935, this road was part of Vidzemes šoseja heading towards Valmiera.
