Riga 2012
Sad news, Riga became 1 year older and since today Riga is 811 years old officially.
Although this year City Festival was celebrating 730 years since Riga joined Hanseatic League.
Why this is sad news? 1 year ago I've been forecasting that Riga's population will go under 700,000 in a few years, but it happened earlier.
Here below are statistics and changes:
Region | 2012 | 2011 | Change |
---|---|---|---|
Riga | 699,203 | 706,413 | -1.02% |
Riga Metro | 1,081,137 | 1,098,523 | -1.58% |
Latvia | 2,217,053 | 2,245,357 | -1.26% |

where do you get such numbers? According to Statistics Bureau, Riga is already around 650 000 since last year, but Latvia - barely over 2 mio (some 2,09 mio)...
I took the data from the same Bureau you have mentioned :)
I saw these 650,000 on English Wikipedia, but I couldn't validate the source myself.
nice wedding carraige.keep it up dear
What's exactly going on there? Why the population is decreasing so fast?
I'm from Brasil and i have been in Latvia once, is such a lovely place, and i would really move myself to live there!!
I would like to visit one day, seems like a wonderful country. However, I guess a lot of persons are migrating, why is that?
Economy is going bad as SHHH.T ((( and actually it was all the time since ninetees. Young people do not have means to live and study here, as well as to find a fine working place..
Nature was not made by man, so it will be nice despite of economic situation. Medieval architecture and all other "creations" was made a long time ago. What's happening NOW - we will see LATER ((( situation around economy and finance is awful.
However, and of course, it is a great place to visit for tourists, and pretty good and cheap place to study engineering and some other fields..
Wow, sorry to see these population numbers going down so fast. I have been to Riga once ten years ago and fell in love with it.
I only wish Latvia and the people there only the best. God bless you.
Gross Gott!

Beautiful shot!
Here’s a great tall ships directory that chronicles the storied histories of tall ships with the same rigging types that visited Riga in 2012 like kruzenshtern and Oosterschelde.
