You will never find any other advertisement in the world written in both Latvian and Lithuanian languages except this one, which is located 500 meters away from Latvian-Lithuanian border on Lithuania's side of Via Baltica road.
For a while I couldn't decide where to publish this photo on Riga blog or on Vilnius Photos blog.
Olaine celebrates its 45th anniversary this year. Usually town's festival takes place in the last weekend of Spring.
On the picture: The town council of Olaine with a huge banner Olainei 45 hanging on it.
I suppose here is no need for translation or explanation what kind of service you can get by visiting this shop.
A stylish yellow boot, hanging next to this wooden building on Tallinas iela, speaks for itself :)
Shoemaker is quite rare profession in developed world, although in Latvia it is still quite common to bring your old shoes to cobbler in order to repair.
Kurzeme (Courland) is one of the three historical regions of Latvia. It is the richest and the most western region. In the Golden age of Kurzeme, it was an autonomous duchy under Polish rule with own colonies in Western Africa and Caribbean Sea, for example Tobago used to belong to Kurzeme.
Traveling around the world I have noticed that advertisement in Latvia is always at much higher level than in any other country. For example, Latvian marketers can easily shake the whole world with fake Meteorite :) Social and health problems are also often being solved with creative ads. Now it is time to fight Hepatitis or hepatits. The writing at bicycle says "Don't eat everything you meet" Have you seen that old yellow bikes? There are plenty of them in town.
Enjoy the Symphony of Riga for 87 EUR. I love airBaltic, because it is nearly the only thing that reminds of Riga outside of Latvia. I found this ad in Amsterdam Airport Schiphol.
Latvijas Leļļu teātris (Latvian Puppet Theater) was opened in postwar Riga in the building of former cinema Radio Modern. All shows are always performed in both languages Latvian and Russian which reflects one of theater's mission. The red banner runs as follows Christmas shows in Puppet theater, so don't forget to bring your child here ;)
This advertisement space on Aristida Briana iela is left unattended for about 20 years and this days' grey weather reproduces sunburned colors even better. I guess it was some kind of Soviet social advertisement and when Latvia became independent, Russian letters were simply painted over. Does anybody have an idea what message could be written there? :)
Staro Rīga (Riga shines) is a city wide light festival in Riga started today, on 14th November. More than fifty objects are shining and making Riga lighter during these long and dark evenings. I am going to publish more photos next days of this splendid event, but for now you are welcomed to check previous festival's photos of Strūklaka, Bibliotēka, Vecrīga, Akmens tilts, Radisson, Cable Bridge.
Jaunais Rīgas Teātris (New Riga theater) is the most newest theater in Riga, opened just in 1992. It is located in a seemingly regular building on Lacplesa iela, in fact this building was used as a residence of many theaters since far year 1902. P.S. On the side wall is the portrait of famous Latvian theatre director Eduards Smiļģis.
For the past couple days everybody in Latvia was speaking about Meteorite smashed Latvia country near Mazsalaca, which is about 140km north from Riga. Recently it was revealed that Meteorite is a hoax made up to attract world attention to Latvia :) Yes, we have a good sense of humor :) Check also other attention getting actions: Parade of Blonde women Longest Dance Longest Run Cola and Mentos record
Another very useful fact to know about Riga is that almost all shops have full working day even on Sundays. Shopping in Riga couldn't be compared to Milan or New York, but some of the popular brands like Giorgio Armani have their representative stores in Riga as well. This Emporio Armani shop is located on the cross of Elizabetes and Baznicas streets.
A future prospect advertisement of Tekstiliana project in Tornakalns area. Housing estate Tekstialiana is going to be built in place of old textile mill. BTW, the office of building owner Capitolia is located at Kugu iela 26, in the house which was renovated from bakehouse.
Click this picture to zoom in and admire this fantastic advertisement of Salli clothing shop at Jomas iela, Jurmala. I didn't visit this clothing store, but, I guess, this is the first gay clothing shop in Latvia.
Remember those burglars which were crawling like spiders on the Press' building? They had been putting banner of extremely right-wing party TB/LNNK with slogan Atbalsti savējos (Support yours) [Un]fortunately huge sheet was blown to tatters, just after several hours they put it :) I personally don't like neither extremely right nor extremely left wing political parties. Also, check TB/LNNK quite funny provocative video (with Russian subtitles)
Krogs Aptieka (Pharmacy Bar) is a funny name for a bar located on Maza Miesnieku street in Riga Old Town. Interior design (scattered pills, medical equipment on shelves) makes you feel that you are in real pharmacy shop. Regular visitors are mostly alternative people. It is said that some of them are living in Aptieka :)
March 8 is International woman Day. Although it is not official holiday in Latvia, it is being celebrated by many Latvians. Traditions are quite simple - to favour women with good wishes and by giving flowers. The giving an official status to this holiday is being discussed each year. Usually the right-wing parties are against acceptance, and the left-wing ones are for. This "colorful" advertisement is sponsored by left-wing party Центр согласия / Saskaņas Centrs (Center of consensus) Last year the 8 March greetings that I found were anonymous.
