Rīgas HES or Hidroelektrostacija (Hydroelectric Power Plant) was built in 1974 on Daugava river next to city border. Its dam holds a large amount of water behind it.
The plant serves also as bridge and connects Kekava town to Dole island, Zirnu island and Salaspils town.
Coming back from Vilnius to Riga I see a huge progress of new developments around the city, including this new overpass next to Z-Towers, between Zunda river and Martin Cemetery and over Daugavgrivas iela.
Does anybody know where it is possible to see the final presentation of this road completed?
Last weekend Riga officially became 1 year older, and its technical age is 810 years!
A massive celebration was held around the city 3 days in a row. Many subevents, like medieval fights, air show and of course fireworks could be observed in Riga these days.
I would like to continue my tradition and provide here some numbers to describe Riga's "growth".
The city mayor is still Nil Ushakov, but according current tendency, soon there will be no city, but just a settlement.
During the last year Riga population went down from 709,145 to 706,413 residents (-2,732); simple calculation still proves that after a couple of years Riga will have less than 700,000 residents.
Riga region population (including other cities) is 1,098,523. No changes because of new expanded borders.
I really don't understand how, but the picture of Latvia population is getting better. The growth is +27,388 or +1,23% of people (from 2,217,969 to 2,245,357)
Check also stats for 2009 and 2010.

This creative picture was found on Riga's future development website, and I couldn't resist not to publish it, because this futuristic view of Riga is so intriguing! :)
I hope Latvijas Tilti will do their job fast and without scandals like it did happen with Sothern Bridge.
You wouldn't believe but this photo was taken in color mode a few days ago :) For me it looks more like it was taken right after Second World War by a fighter pilot flying over Riga :)
Zemitānu tilts is a bridge connecting Center and Purvciems over Zemitanu Railway Station. It was opened in 1985 under the name of Soviet communist Otomārs Oškalns. Although since 1991 it is holding the current name of the small Latvian village next to Lithuanian border. According Riga development plan Oškalnu tilts was supposed to have tramways, but it is still not realised.
Piparkūkas is a traditional Latvian cookies, which are sweet and spicy at the same time. In Gallery Riga shopping center you can find the model of Riga City made of piparkukas.
Staro in Latvian means Shine. Staro Riga is the name of annual light festival which was held 18-22 November. This photo of Alexander Bridge was taken by Delfi's photographer.
Ķīpsala Tunnel is connecting two parts of Kipsala island-neighborhood through Vansu Bridge. The tunnel is city-wide famous for its rich graffiti collection. See the photo collection of tunnel graffiti.

These fellas helped me to buy Canon PowerShot SD4000 IS aka IXUS 300HS, which is the best pocket camera in the world at the moment. Unfortunately it is the most expensive as well :) In any case your donations were the best feedback for my 3 years long project Riga Photos!
Psst.. you are always very welcome to drop some coins and your help is very appreciated. Please donate :)
A couple months ago, when I discovered that Stone Bridge has lost its massive chandeliers, I thought that Riga mayor will replace them to some more modern lamps. Although chandeliers were just polished before City Festival, which will be held upcoming weekend.
Krasta masīvs (Krasta Area) is a district around Krasta street, in fact part of Maskavas Forstate. A lot of Soviet apartment buildings, shopping malls are located here.
It is another nice photo taken from Swedbank office during Riga Smog in the end of January. On the photo it is clearly visible that smog was at level of 50 meters, basically the middle of Shroud Bridge
