This is not April Fools' Day Joke, but a screenshot from Indian movie called Agent Vinod, which was released last year.
Few parts of the movie were filmed in Riga in the 2011 summer and it is worth to see just because of that.
Hot pursuits through Riga streets, epic explosion of Riga Hotel and many other scenes involving Riga sights.
Havana Club Lounge is the name of the first successful private beach in Latvia, located in Dzintari, Jurmala.
Single time entry costs 20 LVL (which is around 30 EUR), prices for drinks and other extras are above average, which makes this place affordable for elite people only.
Although this is the only good place in the whole Jurmala, where you can have a glass of wine watching at sunset.
An abandoned cafe just few meters from beach of Baltic Sea can be found in Jaunķemeri.
This is the second photostop in my coast trip to Nida. Previous was Priedaine. Next is Ragaciems.
Iguana is the name of a restaurant located on Elizabetes iela, within Berga Bazars complex. The food here looks (and tastes of course) much more pleasant than the animal with the same name :) Thanks goes to Mike for showing me the place :)
Morkovka (carrot) is colloquial name for shopping center located on the crossroads of Ilukstes & Deglava streets. It was built in the end of 1980s and painted in absolutely irregular color for Soviet times - the orange one. Nowadays the whole area around this building is called Morkovka, although it is not so orange as before. Morkovka is also kind of nightlife center. Some main residents of the building are Enigma nightclub, Fortuna casino and Deli cafe.
Double Coffee is a Latvian version of Starbucks. Interesting that in every country (except China) where Double Coffee has own cafe shops, Starbucks does not. First ever Double Coffee was opened in 2002 at Stabu street, nowadays it has more than cafes 20 in Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, Belarus, Ukraine and China.
Le Paon Bleu (Indian Peafowl) is the name of recently opened bohemian French restaurant in Old Town. I don't know what new restaurant owners have in mind, but the closed down restaurant Hospitalis, which was located here, went bankruptcy several months ago. Despite being very well promoted Hospitalis couldn't compete with cheaper restaurants and cafes in Old Town. Have you ever tried frogs legs? How does it taste like? :)
Drinking at friday evening must start at work.. oops.. I mean in the bar :)
One of the best bar in old town for shot drinking is Shot Cafe. Here in menu you can find any shot you know :)
Although I must admit that this Shot bar is not the cheapest in town.
Living statues is something that I have never seen in Riga before. In fact, I'm sure that this piece of gold is foreigner, coz he had chosen really not the best place for performance. Photo has been taken in street cafe which is in place of former RTU building.
Ленинград (Leningrad) is one of the most controversial places in town. It has Soviet name, but popular only among Latvians, who mostly hate everything what is related to Communism and the its age itself. All this affects very alternative atmosphere inside. The inside design is worth of separate photo. The writing Ленинград in Russian over the windows is almost invisible, because it is forbidden to name places in Russian Language in Latvia. And it is the only case I met Russian name of place in Riga.
Question to Western visitors, do you know what is the name of Leningrad city since 1991? :)
Whitehouse Party at Vernissage Cafe is kinda Latvian replica of Sensation White. Electronic music, many DJs and the most important that everybody dressed in white (except shoes)
Hotel Bergi is closed down since 2008, but it looks like it is still open. From a distance of course. At some point Berģi was a popular destination for couples with a passionate desires. Despite its cheapness and remoteness here was a good restaurant with panoramic view. It is located just next to Sigulda Highway, hence it could easily take the title of the first Riga Motel.
T.G.I. Friday's is always called just Fridays, but most of the local people don't even know that it stands for Thank God It's Friday's, just because they simply don't go to this American restaurant. Everyday regular visitors of Fridays are Riga tourists, who pretend that they don't like McDonald's and don't know about Hesburger, which is located 1 minute walking from here.
Lidojošā varde (Flying Frog) is a nice cafe in a quiet center on the crossroads of Elizabetes and Antonijas. It is famous because of picturesque location next to Albert street and other architecture examples of Art Nouveau. Despite a little bit high prices on food, the bar is still affordable for almost everybody.
In the summer Riga looks like any other Western European city. A lot of local people go out, happy tourists are visiting town, brasserie are open in the center :) This Summer Terrace is next to one of the many Steiku Haoss restaurants in Riga.
Cafe Старая Рига (Staraya Riga means Old Riga) is another sign of Riga's spirit outside Latvia. It is located in Moscow, in a quite prestigious Basmanny District.
Black Magic place has nothing to do with the powers of darkness, or maybe it has :) It is a cafe shop, which is offering Melnais balzams (Black Balsam), the traditional Latvian alcoholic drink. 80-proof balsam made with herbs and spices and often being served mixed with coffee.
