Ruins of Castle in Cēsis city (80km (50mi) north-eastward from Riga) is one of the most interesting Latvia's sights.
Originally wooden castle was built in 1209, then several times rebuilt and expanded. Nowadays ruins is what is left since Swedish rule in 17 century. Since 1949 a park and The Cesis history museum are located here.
Straupe is a small town on the road from Riga to Valmiera. It is mostly famous for its Medieval castle nowadays a Narcological clinic, which helps alcoholics and drug addicted get back normal life.
Pils laukums un skvērs (Palace square and garden) is located next to Riga Castle. It was formed in 18th century as prestigious walking place for official parties. In 1928 it was renamed after Janis Cakste, the first president of Latvia. During Soviet times it was named as Pioneru laukums (Pioneer square), since 1987 original name and purpose was placed back. Nowadays it ceremonial place for dear foreign guests, like visits of other countries presidents.
Today on 11th of November is Lāčplēša diena. Many people on this day come to Castle walls to put a candle in order to honour heroes of war for Liberation of Latvia from German army in 1919.

I guess that nobody in Riga think that residence of American Embassy on Raina boulevard is a nice building, which adorns city. Despite its very center location (it is next nearest building to French Embassy) it looks like a fortified warehouse. For openers the building has 24*7 strong security, 2 fences and the window guards.
On 11 of November people fire candles and put them on the front wall of Riga Castle, from the side of 11th November str. This tradition is to remember people died to liberate Riga in 1919.
This is building built for cash storage. Quite big, isn't? :) Located in Pardaguava on Valdemara iela, just after Vansu tilts, it is a modern fortress or stronghold where even small design details are defending items which contains for example some sensors.
Rīgas pils (Riga Castle) is a major sight in Riga and the official residence of Latvian President. Castle was founded in 1330. It was rebuilt and renovated many times due the rule of different powers like Germans, Polishes, Lithuanians, Swedes, Russian, Soviets and of course Latvians itself. Pils was always very important stronghold over the whole Baltic Region. Hotel Latvia can be seen on the Right.
