Today is Easter Sunday for Orthodox Christians. Christ is Risen!
There is an interesting phenomenon in Latvia, despite that religion is becoming weaker worldwide, religion in Latvia is getting more popular, stronger and affecting people's everyday life more than before.
On the picture: a continued bulding of new Orthodox Church in Daugavgriva. Two cupolas are still on the ground.
Vakarbuļļu peldvieta (Vakarbulli Bathing site) is the only premium beach within Riga borders.
Beach has got green flag status, which signify of clean water. Also here is a secure car parking, special places for disabled people and children. It is located in one of the most remote Riga parts called Buļļi (Bulls)
Bivouac (Bivak) is the name of the event devoted to historical reconstructed battles, which was being held in Daugavgriva fortress this weekend. A lot of soldiers wearing historical uniform of Swedish, Russian, French, German and other armies of 18-20 centuries inspire the feeling of being moved back for many years by time machine.
Bolderaja Beach is closer to Riga center and has the same landscape as beaches in Jurmala, but it isn't so popular. The beach is technically located in Daugavgriva area, which entirely was a military base, therefore this zone has no any resort infrastructure at all.
Today is a birthday of riga.in :) 2 years have passed since Riga Daily Photo was started. Wow, we are taking the sea! :) A lot of work has been done - about 750 photos were published, first appearance in press, transfer to new domain. And there are still many ideas and things to do in order to improve riga.in and get this photoblog to even higher level. For example, I will tell you a little secret, in a few days riga.in will have a brand new stylish smart design :)
Of course all of this take tons of resources. In fact riga.in is not created to make any money hence it is nonprofit project, but on this very special day if you want to help to riga.in, then you are very welcome to make a small gift :)
A couple of pedestrian tunnels were opened in Riga for the last month. One of them is Tunnel in Daugavgriva. The tunnel goes under Railway, just few meters from Daugavgriva railway bridge. It looks like building is going very fast, but in fact the whole project took more than one month.
September - October is the annual flood season in Riga. Sometimes floods are quite heavy like flood in 2008. But more often Riga gets lucky and only areas next to the sea get flooded for a couple of days.
Убежище (shelter) built in Dünamünde fortress. The shelter was designed to protect military personnel against enemy attacks from the air. In fact it is almost invisible from the areal view.
Children jumping off the train bridge at Daugavgriva every summer The writing in Estonian on the left pier means "A night with you is worth of the whole life"
Building Freeze of Orthodox church in Daugavgriva area.
due global financial crisis, Latvia is suffering from lack of money, so many buildings are being stopped now.
Hopefully building of National Library is in force.
Updated: a church building is nearly finished in spring of 2012
These three Twelfe-storey apartments located in Daugavgriva area (take look at Ilguciems 12s), which is Bolderaja neighbourhood for most Riga people. But actually it is separated neighbourhood with interesting history. Daugavgriva area has own fortress, which was the river post control for ships coming to Riga harbour during several centuries. Basically Daugavgriva is an island, and connecting to Bolderaja by bridge.
Daugavgrīvas tilts (Daugavgriva bridge) is a small double bridge over small river Buļļupe (Bull river) connecting Bolderaja neighbourhood to Daugavgriva area. One bridge handles railway traffic, but second is for cars, pedestrians and bicycles. The second part of the bridge was built just 6 years ago, in year 2002. Before 2002, railway bridge was multipurpose bridge for more than 50 years. BTW, is a good place for diving :)
