In case UK citizens will decide to quit European Union during the referendum next year, this place will be surrounded by queues as many Latvian people live and work in England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and other countries of the the Foggy Albion.
Oliveoil is the name of Italian restaurant located in Old town on Jana iela. There are so many Italians and Italian places in Riga, so it could be possible that Italian could be the 3rd most popular native language of people living in Riga after Latvian and Russian of course. BTW, Halloween is coming this weekend :)
Riga is extremely quite city in comparison with the noise made from vehicle traffic. In Latvia it is possible to use vehicle horn only in emergency situation, all other usage is illegal. Therefore such traffic sign is extremely rare in Latvia.
Raiņa kapi (Cemetery of Rainis) is part of Meža kapi (Forest Cemetery), which was opened in 1913. This gate was unveiled in 1929 after Rainis' death and funerals here.
Despite the full name of Naktsklubs Kapsula (Capsule Nightclub) it is a true morning club. The club was opened few months ago and it is located on Audeju iela across the night drugstore. Most of the visitors come here after 4 o'clock in the morning from regular clubs for after party. Rare case for places in old town, but this bar has entry fee.
Triumphal Arch was built in 1815 in honour of decisive Russian victory over French army of Napoleon I. The memorial has official name Alexander Gate, because initially it was built on Alexander street, next to present VEF Bridge. Nowadays it is located in Viesturs Garden.
Black Magic place has nothing to do with the powers of darkness, or maybe it has :) It is a cafe shop, which is offering Melnais balzams (Black Balsam), the traditional Latvian alcoholic drink. 80-proof balsam made with herbs and spices and often being served mixed with coffee.
Brāļu Kapi (Brothers' Cemetery) is a military cemetery in Ciekurkalns area, which is the last home for more than 2000 soldiers who had fought for the independence of Latvia between 1915 and 1920. Cemetery was officially opened only in 1936, when grand memorial structures and garden decorations were ready.
I've heard many drastic stories about this place, but I never knew that it is located in the very center on Matisa iela. Purvs (Mire) is a nightclub for sexual minorities, mostly for lesbians and gays. Purvs with its dark room has the reputation of the most lecherous place in Riga.
Рижский женский монастырь Св. Сергия or Rīgas Sv. Trijādības Sergija sieviešu klosteris (Riga St. Trinity Sergius Women's Orthodox Monastery) was opened in 1894. Despite it is located in the very center of Riga, on Kr Barona street, only few know that it does exist. Monastery is hidden behind the thick trees and modest wooden fence next to Holy Trinity Cathedral. I guess it is very calm and sacred place protected by the most tallest walls in the center. It is hard to believe that in the middle of vainglorious and lascivious city some people can keep a vow.
Penthouse is a new nightclub in Old Town, which is being promoted as the only place in the Baltic States, where you can watch sensual and spicy shows in our erotic theatre. Why no spicy photos? I just didn't get any invitation for the grand opening ceremony :) BTW, Lounge 8 was located in this building before.
There are a lot of old warehouses around Central Market. Some of them were rebuilt and still are being in use, some of them became night clubs or even art galleries. But some structures were never renovated and nowadays look like ruins of Ancient Rome.
This metal doors of the former NKVD building (later KGB) is untypical monument, which will always remind to people how many victims were tortured and killed because of wrong political views during the early Soviet times aka Stalin's era. Tekila Bum is another place in Old Town to go out for drinking in Riga. By the way it is a night club as well. This place is sequel of another Tequila Boom. How fast are you able to drink one meter of Tequila? :)
Grūst (Push) is not anymore just a simple writing on some door on Merkela street. Push is the most recently opened night club in Riga, hence people without invitation are waiting in line for some new feelings and inexperienced emotions. The building, which Push is sharing with Fashion club, is still famous under another former club's name Vernissage.
