Yesterday, on Saturday morning I was a witness to unknown procession in Old Town on Kalku iela. People were carrying flag of Latvia and another one similar to Italy or Hungary, but flag holders were not looking like Italians nor Hungarians :) Does anybody know what kind of parade it was?
November 18th is the National Day of Latvia. Today is 92 years since Latvia got independent first time. During my absence in Latvia, the role of Riga photographer was taken by Mike.
Today is the day of Latvian Parliamentary election 2010. Latvian people are choosing their servants for the next 4 years, who will work in Saeima, the Latvian parliament. The biggest problem of Latvia is the absence of the strong and powerful leader and a lot of small parties were always scattered the power among themselves. I must admit that Latvia is going in a right direction now, this year we have only 5 parties to choose between.
Embassy of Moldova is located on Zigfrīda Annas Meierovica bulvāris 14. Moldova is one of the former Soviet Republics, which also gained independence together with Latvia in 1991, hence there were always warm relationship between our two countries. Nowadays Moldova experiences political, territorial instability and it maybe the reason why Moldova is the most poorest country in Europe.
I didn't expect that so many Spanish people are living in Riga. Nearly all of them were in Old town to support their national team against The Netherlands and then to celebrate the victory in the Football World championship.
20 Years ago Latvia, on 4 May of 1990, Latvia proclaimed the independence from Soviet Union. Latvian republic regain its sovereignty, Latvian flags were hung out everywhere in the country. The legend of the flag is that wounded soldier was wrapped in a white sheet. After he died and the body was removed, the sheet was saturated by blood, and the clean white strip was in the middle.
It is quite possible that people who hoist flags might don't have any education and therefore there is no wonder that German flag was set in a wrong upside-down way. But how the management of 4 star hotelGarden Palace can miss such a mistake?
在ラトビア大使館 aka Embassy of Japan in Riga resides in the same building with the world-famous companies. Modern Business Center Valdemar sits on the intersection of Valdemara Street and Elizabetes.
Österreichische Botschaft (Austrian Embassy) is located in the area of the most beautiful architecture in Riga. Sind österreichische Volk unter meinem Lesern? :) See also of German Embassy, which building is not less beautiful.
I guess you would like to ask me what kind of relations are you talking about? There aren't any relations between Iran and Latvia And you will be right. I've been looking for an hour for anything that depicts something related to Latvia and Iran in one picture. All I have found is the low quality official video of accreditation Iran ambassador.
Why? Today is the extraordinary city theme day, which is devoted to the latest events in Iran and especially to my colleague who run Tehran Daily Photo. He is missing.
Since the 1st of May 2004, when Latvia joined EU, all entrances to Latvia has European Union symbolic. But I couldn't find any Latvian flag at this checkpoint. We are loosing our identity and we are happy about it.
Photo has been taken at Latvia - Lithuania border next to Tervete town.
1st May is synonymous with International Workers' Day, or Labour Day. It is public holiday in Latvia as well. There is a very patriotic law in Latvia, that every building must be decorated with flag of Latvia on all public holidays. Otherwise building owner has to pay a big fine :( It is very democratic law at same time :) On the picture is decorated Rigas dome, which resides in Rathaus.
16 March is one of the controversial subjects in Latvia. Briefly saying it is day to revere the memory of Latvian people who had fought during second world war. The controversy is about what they had fought for: against Red Army or for Nazi SS or still for Independence of Latvia? I guess at that time nobody knew which front is bad and which is even worse. Latvia was in the middle of two big powers, so Latvians had joined different forces. The war's aftermath is that Latvia had joined to Soviet Union and had lost its recently gained independence. So nowadays the people who were fought against Soviet Army are being called as freedom fighters or Hitler's supporters However, I would like to repeat, at that time nobody knew what is going to happen.
Hotel Radisson SAS Daugava during Staro Riga days. The hotel looks like a wrapped gift, and the flag of Latvia is used as wrapping ribbon :) Or it is just showing direction where to look. Because on the right hand of Radisson is nicely decorated Vansu Tilts. Updated: Hotel was renamed to Radisson Blu in Summer 2009.
Sāpju Dievmātes Romas katoļu baznīca (Virgin of Anguish Roman Catholic Church) located at Pils iela in Old town. Church was built in 1761 as wooden building, then it was rebuilt several times. It looks as today's since 1895. See also Holy Trinity Church.
