Kronbergs & Čukste is our own copyrighted Latvian Ernst & Young (Don't confuse with Ernsts un Jangs :)) By the law auditors and lawyers must be separated, so if Ernst & Young is taking financial consulting, then Kronbergs & Cukste is involved into legal counseling.
I nearly forgot about the monthly theme Funny signs - Click here to view thumbnails for all participants. Walking home I took a photo of the famous side street in Old Town allowing only pedestrian and bicycle traffic. A paradise for bicyclists, but very short one :)
23th February is Defender of the Fatherland Day (День защитника Отечества) in many ex Soviet countries. Fortunately in Latvia it has not legal status. Otherwise my patriotism would look for answer, who is the defender of Latvia? And from who? The guys on the photo are doing very serious job, they are hunters of deadheads in tramways, aka Controllers. They fight against crime everyday, perhaps they are defenders? :) BTW, the price for single use ticket has grown for almost 50% since last 6 months. Now it is 0,70Ls (1 EUR)
Today is Friday, so why not just take a seat on freedom street right in front of hotel Latvia and have some smoke and drink with old buddy? Sometimes when I see such "free from everything" people, I get really curious - what do they have in their minds?
For the past couple days everybody in Latvia was speaking about Meteorite smashed Latvia country near Mazsalaca, which is about 140km north from Riga. Recently it was revealed that Meteorite is a hoax made up to attract world attention to Latvia :) Yes, we have a good sense of humor :) Check also other attention getting actions: Parade of Blonde women Longest Dance Longest Run Cola and Mentos record
It is quite possible that people who hoist flags might don't have any education and therefore there is no wonder that German flag was set in a wrong upside-down way. But how the management of 4 star hotelGarden Palace can miss such a mistake?
Writing Trolejbuss behind the glass was placed in order to avoid confusion. It is very useful because when Hybrid Trolleybus is without trolley poles, it looks exactly like a bus. The route of Trolelybus 8 was recently extended and now it crosses with the route of Bus 8. I can only imagine how many people took the wrong bus :) Check also interesting photo of Trolleybus depo. Picture was taken at recently renovated Grecinieku stop.
Today is the 60th birthday of Zebra Crossing. Can you imagine? :) Not many Rigans knows that zebra on Aspazijas blvd between Kalku and Brivibas is unique because of its width. On the photos is depicted a kind of flash mob. People gathered next to our famous zebra to chalk some greeting writings.
This architecture master piece is located on Bruninieku street in Lower Center. Sharp roof angle could be very useful during winter. Heavy snow doesn't break the roof because it is just slip down.
I guess such name fits better to some adult movie or might be even used as subject in spam email. Maxima is Lithuanian supermarket chain with the worst brand naming strategy.
During Soviet times Volga was the most prestigious car which only very rich people could afford to buy. Also only Volga was used as a taxi car in every Soviet town. I wonder how this one survived for 20 years.
Cemeteries are very often overgrown with weed. Cannabis cultivation is forbidden in Latvia, but who is going to be responsible if it is growing on somebody's tomb? Picture has been taken at Bolderaja's cemetery.
Every language is being developed and extended every day, especially by not native speakers. Transliteration of Russian is quite controversial point, but I guess it is unavoidable future and this writing is a good example of that. Dzērieni or Napitki (Напитки) means Drinks in Latvian and Russian respectively.
Abacus aka counting frame is being used in some places of the world, for example in Latvia. Quite late introducing of electronic calculator to Latvia is only part of the reason. Also Abacus is very stable and could be easy used by people with weak eyesight. This one I found in Agenskalns pharmacy.
Pērses iela (Peer/Lord Street) is quite short and narrow street between Kr. Barona and A. Caka streets. It is infamous among Estonian-speaking people because of funny name interpretation. Is there any reader who speaks and writes Estonian? Please write your comment :)
Did you know that Dwarfs also had settled in Riga? Unfortunately, I couldn't catch Snow White coming out :) This little wooden house is located on Kalnciema iela, the street which connects Riga Center and Riga Airport.
Just BIG. In fact it is not even a bank, but a company which gives term loans at high interest. Recently BIGBANK became very popular as many Latvian people suffer from lack of money and such banking-house is the only way to get some money quickly. Of course, some people consider such institutions as just another financial trap.
