FIFA Football World Cup 2014 is going to start in a few days, unfortunately Latvian Natiaonal team haven't managed to get into final part, which will take place in Brazil.
Likely almost every of us, Latvians, has another or two favourite team :)
Personally, I like to watch football with friends in shot bar Spot Kafe. Spot is a good place in Old town with few large TVs always showing sport games.
Recent years Poker is gaining a massive popularity in all parts of the world, including Riga. In some countries Poker has been recognized as sport, but in Latvia it is still gambling. Photo has been taken legally in Olympic Voodoo Casino in Hotel Latvia.
Ice Skating is a traditional winter entertainment for Riga. A lot of Ice skating rinks are placed in town. For example this one is located at Strelnieku laukums.
Iguana is the name of a restaurant located on Elizabetes iela, within Berga Bazars complex. The food here looks (and tastes of course) much more pleasant than the animal with the same name :) Thanks goes to Mike for showing me the place :)
Usually I see similar pictures in music clip scenes about some famous American rockstars, but I didn't expect to see such abundance in Riga :) In this hangar are five small private planes like Cessna 172 and additional free space for the sixth one.
Galleria Riga is the name of the newest Shopping center in Riga, which opened its doors just 2 days ago.
It seems that stakeholders and/or designers has very narrow imagination to name it like that, because
1: the name says absolutely nothing;
2: it is very easy to confuse Galleria Riga with Galerija Centrs;
3: name Riga is already taken by another shopping mall Riga Plaza;
4. it's stupid to name some place with the same name as the city it is located in. E.g. I can't imagine New York Mall in New York, or Café de Paris in Paris.
Although interior designers had done their job perfectly, the mall looks great, especially the terrace on top. Fresh photos of Riga roofs are coming!
Galeria is located in a very center of Riga, on Dzirnavu iela 67, which is between Terbatas and Brivibas streets.
Check also Terrace on Galleria's roof.
Baltic Furniture 2010 is an annual exhibition, which is being held in Kipsala Expo Center. All ideas, design, brands and furniture showcased here are made in Baltics.
The garage of 5 retro cars (e.g. BMW, Styer), many motorcycles and other classic stuff can be found in a private car museum, which is located not far from Rundale Castle in Zemgale.
Thousands of flights are cancelled because of Volcanic ash over Nordic countries, including Latvia. More than 20,000 passengers get stuck in Riga airport, which is closed for all flights since yesterday evening.
Vulcan hazard experts say that ash clouds may block all flights for few weeks and will continue to affect some flights for at least several months.
Although airport officials say that air traffic will be resumed tomorrow morning, on 17th of April.
UPDATED on 17th of April afternoon: All flights are still cancelled (see date on picture)
Lido at Krasta is one of the few places in Riga, where live performance is being held everyday. Live music makes people dance waltz, cha-cha-cha and other ballroom dances every single day.
Full car wash in Riga usually costs around 15 ls (20 EUR). When it is said full, it means exterior and interior cleaning. Usually after washing, car looks for a couple of thousands more expensive :)
A lot of people will consider this photo more than stupid, but I think it perfectly depicts some part of Riga daily life. Half empty bus Nr 3 with passengers. See also Interior of Tram.
Bakery is an untypical club/bar located on Bruninieku iela 73. Electronic music of all kinds could be heard here. Incredible friendly atmosphere, low prices and family design makes this place looking tempting to be visited. It seems that everybody knows each other here, but in fact almost all people came here by chance. Bar menu is unprecedented for Riga. It includes even some drugs, which are not forbidden in Riga yet. Just have a look at this girlish mirror with teddy bears next to toilet :)
This is a quite typical view for state-owned institutions in Latvia. An evolution of interior can be seen with naked eye. In the beginning it was created building and chairs; and then heating and electricity was added; and then oblique ventilation tube struggled through the wall. And finally a big computer hub was attached to the wall :)
Interior of the rich Latvian flat in the beginning of the 20th century. Design is exhibited in the Museum of History of Latvia, which is located inside of Riga Castle.
This picture is not special at all, but it is interesting to to depict Riga as it is today. Maybe after 20 years such photo of Tramway Salon could be put on exhibition under name.. What could be the good name for such simple photo? :)
