Today I was driving through Kliversala area and noticed that the old Tsar-style police department is being demolished...
It was the very first PD in Riga on the right coast of Daugava river.
I was hoping this eclectic building will be given a second chance to like museum or something else, but it is not.
Yachts becoming more and more popular among Rigans. Beside harbours like this one in Agenskalns neighbourhood, there are office buildings with mooring and clubs like First Club.
Uzvaras bulvāris (Victory boulevard) runs from Stone Bridge till Arcadia Park. The total length is 1024 meters. As many streets in Kliversala area, Uzvaras Bulvaris also had past related to Watercraft. The former name of boulevard is Schoonerstrasse (улица Шкунная, Schoneru iela). The main sights are National Library, Railway Museum, Victory park and monument.
A new real estate project Trijādības nams located in Kliversala was finished in 2008. As many others new apartment buildings it is more empty than occupied now. Trijadibas nams could be translated in English as Trinity House.
Reflection of water is making an optical illusion of continuous basin depicted on this photo. In fact here are 2 water bodies; a pool next to Swedbank and Daugava river, which flows on different level. This picture is participating in Monthly Theme Day Reflections. Radisson BLU (formerly Radisson SAS) is one of the most prestigious hotel chains represented in Riga. Radisson Hotel is located on riverside with fantastic view towards old town and city center.
Not very old, but abandoned house on Kuģu iela (Ship street), which goes next to Daugava river. Along with with abandoned buildings at Kugu iela like this one or Police Dept (Kugu iela 15), here are a lot of fancy building e.g. Kugu iela 26, Radisson Blu (Kugu iela 24), or Kugu iela 11.
Ты не одна (You are not alone) was recently written on the roof of almost collapsed building in Kliversala area. I guess this phrase is continue of AB Dambis writings, which are just few hundreds meters from this building. The same color, font, style and the way to express feelings of love. I want to love somebody like he does.
AB Dambis (AB Bank) was built to separate Daugava river from dockyard more than 100 years ago. It is a narrow 550 meters long strip, which is used as walking or running place nowadays. Most of Riga Russians called this building as Коса (Kosa / spit)
As today is the first day of spring, this could be the last weekend of current ice hockey season. The games are being hold each weekend on Agenskalna licis, Pardaugava. Check another picture of ice hockey on river and the night shot.
Riga (and Latvia) has almost the highest percentage of houses supplied by district heating in European Union. The chimney at the background is district heating plant of Kliversala neighborhood in Pardaugava. Such plants produce warm water from natural gas. This water is being used not only to take shower, but to warm our houses as well, which is especially important during winters.
This red brick house is the former Police department of Zemgales borough.
This building was especially built for Police Service during Russian Empire times.
During Soviet epoch it was residence of Militsiya of Riga Leninsky District.
Dept moved to the new place more than 10 years ago and since then this nice building left abandoned.
UPDATE: In 2017 the building was destroyed.
Last days is so freezing cold in Riga that even Ice fishermen wear special plastic bag to keep warm air inside :) Picture has been taken on Agenskalna licis, on the background are Trinity Church and some1 building.
On the picture in picture is the same building, but before renovation. Interesting is that the top floor with very high ceiling was split into two with medium range high ceiling. The address of this building is Kugu iela 11/13, the backstreet part of the house is in much worse condition.
Hotel Radisson SAS Daugava during Staro Riga days. The hotel looks like a wrapped gift, and the flag of Latvia is used as wrapping ribbon :) Or it is just showing direction where to look. Because on the right hand of Radisson is nicely decorated Vansu Tilts. Updated: Hotel was renamed to Radisson Blu in Summer 2009.
Āgenskalna līcis (Agenskalns bay) for a long time washed the frontiers of 6 islands: Little and Great Kliversala, Kipsala, Burkansala, Mukusala and Biekinsala. After several hydrotechnical buildings around Daugava, to keep the river inside of its border and to avoid floods during 18 - 20 centuries, these islands joined to mainland, but the bay left. Agenskalns Bay was good space to build repair harbor. During the 20th century here was several maintenance facilities. Nowadays, bay waters used only for recreation like fishing, or rarer for camping. Agenskalna licis borders with Victory Park.
Valguma iela (Wet or Moist street) is quiet street in Pardaugava running parallel to Daugava river.
Some years ago after changing the pavement from cobblestone to concrete pavers, Valguma street became popular shortcut to Riga Center avoiding some big traffic jams.
