This is not April Fools' Day Joke, but a screenshot from Indian movie called Agent Vinod, which was released last year.
Few parts of the movie were filmed in Riga in the 2011 summer and it is worth to see just because of that.
Hot pursuits through Riga streets, epic explosion of Riga Hotel and many other scenes involving Riga sights.
It is not a photo, but technology constantly goes forward, so I have started to experiment with videos :)
Please check my first timelapse video taken last rainy monday on the way to Vilnius from Riga.
Cinema Bar aka Cinamon is a quiet and cheap place in the middle of Old Town on Kaleju iela. This movie-themed bar has the lowest beer price in town, like in French Bar. The beer price is 0,70 Ls (less than 1 EUR) for 0,5 liters, hence they are often run out of it :)
The main Cinema in Riga is Forum cinemas, which is located on the street of 13th January. Cinema was opened in 2003 as the most advanced cinema in Eastern Europe. 14 movie halls, new technologies, world premiers and perfect location lead to the closure of almost all other Riga cinemas.
Forum Cinemas as known as Parex Plaza and formerly was known as Coca-Coca Plaza is one of two mainstream Riga cinemas, in other words which shows the same movies as everywhere else in the world. The most interesting thing about Latvian cinemas is that movies are usually subtitled in two languages (Latvian and Russian) at the same time. Only animated cartoons for children are being dubbed. See another picture of the main Riga Cinema.
Yesterday in Latvia, just one week after the world, was the premier of the new shocking film Brüno. The movie is from producer of Borat and they are quite similar. Bruno is Austrian gay who wants to became world class celebrity and goes to USA. Of course it is forbidden to make any photos in cinema, but I wanted to show subtitles in two languages. Every movie in Latvia is being subtitled in two languages: Latvian and Russian. This movie itself is also in two languages: English and German. Unglaublich!
Daile (Beauty or Art) is the name of the former Riga cinema, which was recently closed. It was opened in 1936. At that time there were about 50 cinemas in Riga. Last years it was famous as budget cinema for more or less old movies and cheap prices.
Kinomuzejs (Museum of Cinema) is the only museum about art of film making in Latvia. It was opened in warehouse on Peitavas iela in 1988. After it was moved several times and had no permanent exposition. in 2006 it had finally settled down at the same place when it was opened very first time. Guest photographer this time is Carolina.
Railway Bridge over frozen Daugava river. Skyscrapers buildings of Panorama Plaza at the background are disturbing Pardaugava's flat panorama. By the way, this view was used in the movie Escape from City 17, the creation of movie was inspired by Half-Life game. Guest Photographer: Vlad
Swastika is flying over Riga buildings because Latvian Legioners got approval for their new event. A joke! :) Miss Irena's Children movie is being filmed in Riga this days. This movie tells the story about Polish jews during Second World War, and will be released in 2009.
I have received this DVD from Ben from the Netherlands, who is one of Riga Daily Photo readers. The Dogs of Riga is a movie based on book with the same name. The movie was filmed in 1995, mainly in Riga, so it depicts scenes and views of Riga that time. For me it was the main reason, why I've watched this movie till the end. Because of language barrier (movie was in Swedish and subtitles were in Dutch) I can't fully evaluate this movie :) Thank you, Ben :)
Almost all Riga suburbs looks very similar. Furthermore in all Soviet cities suburbs are built in a similar way :) One of the most famous Russian movies is Irony of Fate. This movie is about regular guy living in Moscow, who get drunk and accidentally took a plane to Leningrad (second largest city in USSR) In Leningrad airport the guy took a taxi and ask to bring him home by telling his Moscow address. Taxi driver brought him to the same address but in Leningrad. Area was identical, street was identical, house was identical, and the key to his Moscow flat matched to the Leningrad door... He got entered into another flat and felt asleep. What happened next? Owner of the flat, good-looking woman, came home later and found a stranger sleeping in her bed...
This building is embassy of glorious nation of Kazakhstan in Riga :) I am one of them, who like Borat movie. And I do not understand why a lot of people find this movie offensive. This movie is a really big joke about stupid people and derision of many stupid fears. Watch a nice video on youtube.
