Cesis Castle


Ruins of Castle in Cēsis city (80km (50mi) north-eastward from Riga) is one of the most interesting Latvia's sights.
Originally wooden castle was built in 1209, then several times rebuilt and expanded. Nowadays ruins is what is left since Swedish rule in 17 century. Since 1949 a park and The Cesis history museum are located here.

Triangula Bastions

Triangula Bastions
Triangula Bastions (Triangular Bastion) is a shopping center on 11. Novembra mainly occupied by Maxima.
The name is delivered from a bastion, which had protected the city walls and obstructing the enemy access to Riga from Daugava river.
Medieval bastion ruins still can be observed in the basement of this building made of glass.

Runestone

Latvian Runestone
Apsīšu rūnakmens (Apsites rune stone) located just several kilometers from Rūjiena town.
It is one of the oldest memorials in Latvia and dated circa 9th century AD.
Runestone is left by Scandinavian vikings visiting these lands for trading with Latvian ancestors.

Muzeju Nakts 2009

Muzeju nakts 2009
Muzeju nakts (Museum Night) is annual international event, which is being held in many cities worldwide.
Riga is taking part in this event several years in a row. Tens of museums and galleries keep their doors open for one night.
Tens of thousands people pour out into the city and night Riga looks very lively.
I've visited several quite alternative museums during the night and all of them were boring nearly tasteless.

Restoration of Independence

Occupation museum decoration on 4th May
Today, on the 4th of May, is the day of adoption of the Declaration of independence of Latvia.
Basically it is the day when Latvia left Soviet Union and became independent again.
Many people in Latvia consider this day as the end of Occupation of Latvia.

Kinomuzejs

Kinomuzejs Riga
Kinomuzejs (Museum of Cinema) is the only museum about art of film making in Latvia.
It was opened in warehouse on Peitavas iela in 1988. After it was moved several times and had no permanent exposition.
in 2006 it had finally settled down at the same place when it was opened very first time.

Morning after Blizzard

Railway museum
Last night in Riga was quite rage blizzard. In the morning everybody discovered the consequences of that like traffic jams and delay in transport.
Riga is not ready for that kind of winter :)
It took 3 times longer for me to reach my workplace.

Riga Zoo must be included in your Riga visiting tour as one of the most interesting Riga places which is home for more than 3000 animals (approx 500 species)

Brīvdabas muzejs


Latvijas Etnogrāfiskais brīvdabas muzejs (Latvian Ethnographic Open Air Museum) is one of the largest and the most interesting museums in Riga.
The huge collection of all ethnic group households living in Latvia territory for the past thousands years.
The territory of museum is almost one square kilometer, so it will take a while to see all exhibits.

Pulvera tornis


Pulvera tornis aka Pulverturm (Powder Tower) is the only remaining tower of City Wall.
Located at the end of Wall Street, it is one of Riga medieval sights.
Pulverturm was built in 14th century, and originally was named as Smilšu tornis (Sand tower) because of the main sand road coming to Riga.
It was rebuilt several times, last annex was built in 1930s, and the tower became as part of Art of War Museum.

Muzeju nakts


Muzeju nakts (Museums Night) is an annual event. During the one night of the year almost all Riga museums are open.
Museums Night attracts many people from different Latvian cities. More than 50 000 visitors make this night the biggest cultural event in Riga.
Photo has been taken on Dom Square, where Photography exhibition was held.

Latvijas Nacionālais Mākslas muzejs


Latvijas Nacionālais Mākslas muzejs (Latvian National Museum of Art) aka LNMM is one of the most interesting and largest Riga museums. It is located in the Center of Riga, on Kr. Valdemāra Street close to Orthodox Cathedral.
LNMM permanent collection contains more than 50 thousands works of art.
In addition to its permanent exhibitions, the Museum of Art organizes and hosts travelling shows throughout the whole year.

Barikādes


Please don't be afraid, Latvia is not preparing to new war :)
This barricades was set up in front of Latvian Academy of Art as part of exposition to remember events was held during early 1991.
In 1991 Latvia achieved independence from USSR. Some fights occurred in Center of Riga, and some barricades were placed in the city.
Latvian government spend a lot of money every year on such things.
Why this year? 17 years isn't so big anniversary. What they want to prove or to show?
