Ruins of Castle in Cēsis city (80km (50mi) north-eastward from Riga) is one of the most interesting Latvia's sights.
Originally wooden castle was built in 1209, then several times rebuilt and expanded. Nowadays ruins is what is left since Swedish rule in 17 century. Since 1949 a park and The Cesis history museum are located here.

For this matter I took photo of First Trolleybus Park, which was opened in 1913, initially as Tramway Depot. Trolleybus transportation is very rare outside of Eastern Bloc and I consider trolleybuses as one of Riga uniqueness. It happened that Riga has no Disney Land or any other amusement park like in many other big cities. So many traveling Luna Parks are often Riga guests. Usually they are being hosted at Central Station Square or next to Elkor Plaza, like this one or another one before. Rīgas Sv. Trīsvienības evaņģēliski luteriskā baznīca (Riga Holy Trinity Evangelic Lutheran Church) is located in Sarkandaugava borough on the hill and surrounded by territories of the former cemetery. It was built in 1878 as separate church for Lutherans living in Sarkandaugava, because before all three major confessions in Riga (Lutheran, Orthodox and Catholic) were meeting in a small wooden church, which was unacceptable for the most of the people living at that time.
Esplanāde is one of the Central Parks in Riga, which is located between Brivibas, Elizabetes, Valdemara and Kalpaka street. This park is one of the oldest in Riga and has very rich history. Many monuments (Rainis, Kalpaks) and historical buildings like Orthodox Cathedral, Art Museum and Art Academy are located within park borders.
Jānis Pliekšāns aka Rainis used to be a big figure in Latvian literature and national movement. In fact Rainis is the only ethnic Latvian who was candidate for Nobel Prize, although unavailing. His wife, Aspasia was also prominent public figure; and both of them were several times in exile because of political views against the regime of Imperial Russia.
Triumphal Arch was built in 1815 in honour of decisive Russian victory over French army of Napoleon I. The memorial has official name Alexander Gate, because initially it was built on Alexander street, next to present VEF Bridge. Nowadays it is located in Viesturs Garden.
Alfrēds Kalniņš is one of the most famous Latvian composers. During his life he used to work in many cities, including New York. His sculpture was erected in 1979, on his 100th birthday. Initially the statue was in front of Opera, but now it is looking towards Opera's back.
Relatively new private transport Segway is also available in Riga, for quick sightseeing for example. Segway's designer predicts that in future everybody will use it as main transport on daily basis :)
Pils laukums un skvērs (Palace square and garden) is located next to Riga Castle. It was formed in 18th century as prestigious walking place for official parties. In 1928 it was renamed after Janis Cakste, the first president of Latvia. During Soviet times it was named as Pioneru laukums (Pioneer square), since 1987 original name and purpose was placed back. Nowadays it ceremonial place for dear foreign guests, like visits of other countries presidents.
Every place in Riga looks different and more romantic under the snow. Embankment at 11 Novembra krastmala is the best place in Riga for walking and having chat at the bench. Please note, that Municipal police officers are frequent guests here, so keep your drinks hidden :)
