The beginning of the new year regularly is being celebrated by choosing the Best Photo of the year! As always, it is nearly impossible to pick up the one among all other Riga photos, especially for me :) therefore, I kindly asked for help from my dear visitors to pick up their best photo. Here below are top 4 photos according visitors choice: Holy Trinity Lutheran Church - fairy tale glade with church in early September Brivibas Bulvaris - photo of the high street taken from the hotel in the sunny July morning Towards Petersburg - October's perspective view of highway towards Russian North capital Meistaru iela - photo of cartoon-like little houses in Old Town, which was published in December
I have to announce that I'm also leaving Riga in two weeks and most probably I will discontinue to publish new photos on daily basis very soon. Therefore I kindly ask you, my visitors, maybe somebody has willingness to take and publish pictures of Riga instead of me? If so, please contact me.
Public Transportation is the today's topic of City Daily Photo blogs. Click here to view thumbs for all participants. For this matter I took photo of First Trolleybus Park, which was opened in 1913, initially as Tramway Depot. Trolleybus transportation is very rare outside of Eastern Bloc and I consider trolleybuses as one of Riga uniqueness. Check also another pictures of Second Trolleybus Park, which is located in Tornakalns.
Another Monthly Theme came and this time the topic is Graffiti. Again. I couldn't find quickly any really good graffiti in Riga, so I decide to put the bad one :) This type of graffiti is quite regular for Riga blocks, tunnels and industrial areas. This electric box is located inside of the former Phoenix factory territory. Check previous Graffiti Theme Photo or click here to view thumbnails for all participants.
Bright Colours is the topic of regular Monthly theme and I was too late to take a good photo on time :) For a couple of days I couldn't find in Riga anything brighter than Piena Svetki (Milk Fest), which was held on 1st of August in area next to Piens club. Reflection of water is making an optical illusion of continuous basin depicted on this photo. In fact here are 2 water bodies; a pool next to Swedbank and Daugava river, which flows on different level. This picture is participating in Monthly Theme Day Reflections. I nearly forgot about the monthly theme Funny signs - Click here to view thumbnails for all participants. Walking home I took a photo of the famous side street in Old Town allowing only pedestrian and bicycle traffic. A paradise for bicyclists, but very short one :)
Milda is the statue's name on the top of Brīvības piemineklis (Liberty Monument), which is erected on Brivibas bulvaris, in the very center of Riga. The woman is holding three stars symbolizing freedom and three historical regions of Latvia - Kurzeme (including Zemgale), Latgale and Vidzeme. Writing Tēvzemei un Brīvībai means For the Fatherland and the Freedom. The monument is 42 meters high and was built in 1935 in the place of monument to Peter I the Great. This photo is devoted to the Monthly Theme day, which is Statues. On photo there are two statues more at the bottom of monument. Click here to view thumbnails for all participants. BTW, today is International Labour Day and hence official holiday.
During the early spring everything in the country looks gray, except Red clothes on the clothesline. Today's monthly theme is Red, click here to view thumbnails for all participants Also, check other photos labelled under Red.
5 years passed since monsieur Eric Tenin started his Paris Daily Photo, the very first City Daily Photo blog. In fact I was inspired not only by Paris, but also by Brain's New York, which was started on 17 March 2006. Today's Photo is a tribute to celebrate 5 years anniversary and the theme is the Tenin Technique. Eric's photo I love PDP inspired me to use the Tenin's Technique. Do not forget to view all participants.
This fairy tale picture was taken today in Šmerļa forest, which is between Teika and Jugla neighborhoods. Recent and frequent snow storms brought to Riga unseen amount of snow for many years. This photo is made for City Daily Monthly Theme, which is Wood. Click here to view thumbnails for all participants
Regular theme of City Daily Photo Blogs - The Best Photo of the previous year 2009! Believe me, I've been trying to pick one, but I couldn't choose the best one :( Therefore I would like to thank all of regular readers who expressed their opinion in comments and advised me to choose the best photos. If you still have own idea, please feel free to comment and say which photo is better than others. It is always interesting to see what people like and why. Sometimes it is real discovery for me.
Following 4 photos are considered to be the best of 2009. From upper left: Gap - published in October Улица Кирова aka Kirov street - published in November Feet - published in June Protesters - published in December
August has passed and, again, it's time for the city monthly theme! September's topic is Big. What does Riga have really big? The Big Christmas Tree, of course. Also Bigbank. Anything else? A Big problem! Big Game is casino network with fruit machines. My attitude to Riga casino is the same as Riga Mayor's one - All gambling places should be removed from Riga or concentrated in one area. Especially small ones, made at the corner like Zilais Dimants on Ernesta Birznieka-Upisa iela. Click here to view thumbnails for all participants
Never forget Riga nights, shining lights
Playing music and dancing so free
You and me making love is like raw ecstasy
Let me be...
(Riga Nights Lyrics)
This is the empty space that left after Rīgas Sporta pils (Palace of Sport) demolition. Sport Palace was mainly Ice Hockey venue, which handled many sport and music events from 1970 till it 2007. I have personal feeling to this place, because I spent a lot of time here during my childhood. My mother used to work as technologist in Sport Palace. Now there is a project to build office building, but it is frozen for undefined time.
I guess you would like to ask me what kind of relations are you talking about? There aren't any relations between Iran and Latvia And you will be right. I've been looking for an hour for anything that depicts something related to Latvia and Iran in one picture. All I have found is the low quality official video of accreditation Iran ambassador.
Why? Today is the extraordinary city theme day, which is devoted to the latest events in Iran and especially to my colleague who run Tehran Daily Photo. He is missing.
