A lovely sunny day in the winter is the perfect opportunity to improve your cross-skiing skills in Victory Park. Hundreds of semi-pro, amateurs and children are skiing for fun from dawn till dusk.
Lutera evaņģēliski luteriskā baznīca (Evangelic Lutheran Church of Martin Luther) was built in 1891. It is located on the hill in Tornakalns (literally Tower Hill) area, not very from the station. The community of Tornakalns Lutheran church is the biggest Lutheran community in Latvia and numbers nearly 4000 members.
Православная церковь Нерукотворенного образа спаса or Kristus Pestītāja Svētbildes pareizticīgo baznīca (Orthodox Church of Vernicle) was built in 1893 in territory of Tornakalns cemetery, at then border of Riga, hence it is so small and almost invisible. This church was built mainly for requiem service, but today it is church in the full sense of the word. Today taking this picture I met a woman who gave me a candy by saying С Праздничком! (Happy feast!) I am curious what she meant, because today is dual holiday - St Valentine's day and Maslenitsa.
A future prospect advertisement of Tekstiliana project in Tornakalns area. Housing estate Tekstialiana is going to be built in place of old textile mill. BTW, the office of building owner Capitolia is located at Kugu iela 26, in the house which was renovated from bakehouse.
Jelgavas iela (Jelgava street) is an alley street in Pardaugava. It is named after Jelgava city, which is located 40 km from Riga. Trolleybus park is located at Jelgavas street.
Jehovas liecinieku valstības zāle or Зал Царства Свидетелей Иеговы (Jehovah's Witnesses Kingdom Hall) is another alternative Christian movement, which reached Latvia last years. Despite that this religion is banned in many countries and given as sect, there are more than 2000 members in Latvia. Interesting that Michael Jackson was born a Jehovah's Witness, but they force him to leave church after his profane art. This fact proves that "publishers" have very strong morals and principles. Check also other alternative and minor religious movements seen in Riga.
Arkādijas parks (Park of Arcadia) is located in Pardagauva between Monument of Victory and Tornakalns station. Small river Marupite purling and twisting among stone hills, lake and a couple of waterfalls make Arcadia one of the most beautiful spots in Riga.
Somewhere there, inside of darkness is Police Station of Torņakalns neighbourhood :) Just 50 meters, but I wouldn't like to go there.. It isn't looking safe at all :D
Torņakalns (Tower Hill) neighborhood located in West Part of Riga called Pardaugava. There are few noteworthy objects in this area, and one of them is the railway station which is infamous for its purpose during the Second World War. It was the biggest departure point for people who were deported to Siberia.
