Olaine celebrates its 45th anniversary this year. Usually town's festival takes place in the last weekend of Spring.

The monument of Ilyushin Il-28 military aircraft is located in a small village Skulte, 100 meters next to RIX.
Skulte was a closed military area before 1993, which was home for 27th division of Soviet Air Defence Forces.
People living in this area were also serving the Anti-Aircraft base in Marupe.
Jaunmārupe is a small place next to Riga. It was formed in 1970s as collective farm. Nowadays it is a satellite town of Riga, which basically has nothing to see, except this futuristic water tower. Check another water tower in Marupe, which also has a fabulous design.
Another monument devoted to the revolution of 1905 is located in one of Riga suburbs, Ulbroka town. It is the main sight of the small town, which is located on the fork of two roads Riga-Ogre and Riga-Ergli.
Jelgava is the 4th largest city in Latvia, which is located just in 40 kilometers (25 miles) from Riga. Many of Jelgava's 65000 inhabitants are strongly connected to Riga because of studies, work or other business and travel almost everyday back and forth.
Just few Rigans know that word Riga stands not only for the capital of Latvia, but it is also name for some cities, towns and other places around the world. Today it is exactly 201 year since Riga town was formed in the state of New York in United States of America. Nowadays Riga, NY is a small town with population of 6,000 people. I hope one day I will take a plane to New York and take these pictures by myself, but for now I am sending big thanks for photos to Art and Jim from Riga, NY
Mārupe (Mara's river) is one of the Riga's satellite towns, located at the south-west border, next to Airport. Town was founded in 1925 and named after river of almost the same name Nowadays Marupe has reputation as an area for families with mid-high income. Total population is 5,500 people. Also it is one of the most fast growing towns in Latvia, total population has been increased more than in 3 times for the last 10 years.
Mārupes ūdenstornis (Marupe Water tower) was built in 2002. The tower's height is 58 meters, hence it is the most tallest building in Marupe. Shortly after being built the Water tower became the most recognizable reference point in the whole area.
Riga had town wall almost since it was founded. Nowadays only two pieces of that wall are still remained. One of them is located between Marstalu and Minsterejas streets, just next to November 11 embankment. The building of town wall was the business of every Riga citizen. Each person living in medieval Riga had to help built the wall. It was like a hut tax.
Holy Friday or Good Friday is the day, when people commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus. This day is part of Easter and it is the bank holiday in Latvia and in many other countries of Western world. I met this people singing prayers in Dobele, town which is 75 kilometers from Riga.
Since a long time I wanted to publish advertisement of Latvijas Krājbanka on the shorter side of Jekaba Kazarmas. The Advertisement depicts bank's presence in each Latvian region, showing coat of arms of all Latvian cities and towns. Please see also Riga escutcheon (part of Riga Coat of Arms)
Now the most breaking news in Latvia is the fire of several tank cars near Ventspils town. The incident caused by collision of oil car and benzine car. It is said that 2 dead bodies already found. The flame of is as big as it can be seen from far distance.
