During travelling you can see a many unusual things, for example this car-carrying trailer full with vintage automobiles.
This photo was taken somewhere between Irbene and Ventspils.
Usually I don't post photos of traffic accidents, which are more than regular events in Riga. But in this case, I just curious how driving school car could get there? :) This picture was observed today on 11. Novembra krastmala during sunset.
Kurzemes prospekts (Kurzeme avenue) is a huge street around the whole Imanta neighbourhood. Together with Jurmalas gatve the Kurzemes prospekts forms a regular pentahedron. Illuminated at night 120-meters tall chimney belongs to Imanta heating plant. Plant was built in 1975.
Dubulti Stacija (Dubulti Station) is one of the stops on the Riga - Sloka railway, originally opened in 1877. The current building was built by Soviet architects in 1977. The station shape reminds a high wave.
A huge traffic jams this morning made thousands of people delay their work. Snowstorm last night brought additional 20 centimeters of snow. Some snowdrifts are higher than 1,5 meters (5 feet)
This advertisement space on Aristida Briana iela is left unattended for about 20 years and this days' grey weather reproduces sunburned colors even better. I guess it was some kind of Soviet social advertisement and when Latvia became independent, Russian letters were simply painted over. Does anybody have an idea what message could be written there? :)
Despite being very expensive Patrick Hellmann Collection (aka PHC) has the cheapest fashion website ever. I like this photo because of depicting the lively nature of motion and Riga traffic. It reminds of New York, isn't? :) See also Emporio Armani shop in Riga.
This baroque style building was built in 1901 in the then prestigious place of Riga, at the corner of Suworow-Straße (Alexander Suvorov street) and Mühlenstrasse (Mill Street). Today these streets called slightly different Krisjana Barona iela and Dzirnavu iela.
Writing Trolejbuss behind the glass was placed in order to avoid confusion. It is very useful because when Hybrid Trolleybus is without trolley poles, it looks exactly like a bus. The route of Trolelybus 8 was recently extended and now it crosses with the route of Bus 8. I can only imagine how many people took the wrong bus :) Check also interesting photo of Trolleybus depo. Picture was taken at recently renovated Grecinieku stop.
Today is the 60th birthday of Zebra Crossing. Can you imagine? :) Not many Rigans knows that zebra on Aspazijas blvd between Kalku and Brivibas is unique because of its width. On the photos is depicted a kind of flash mob. People gathered next to our famous zebra to chalk some greeting writings.
13. Janvāra iela (13th January street) is not named because of Riga riots, that happened in 2009, 13th of January. It is named because of riots that happened in year 1905, basically it was the beginning of Russian Revolution in Latvia.
Marijas iela (Maria street) formerly Pleskavas iela (Pskov Street) is one of the main streets in Riga. Marijas iela starts at Central station, runs several blocks and then turns into Caka iela. It is not an unique case in Riga, when the same street has two names, one at the beginning and another one at the end. At the foreground a pink Art Nouveau building is newly opened Nordic Hotel Bellevue.
Dzirnavu iela (Miller Street) is the one-way traffic street in the very center of Riga. Basically, Dzirnavu runs through the whole center perpendicularly to Brivibas. A lot of offices are located on this street making it very busy during rush hours, but this picture has been taken just after morning jams.
Another picture of Aspazijas Bulvaris, one of the streets, which borders Old town. This wide boulevard is named after Aspazija. Former names were: Teātra bulvāris / Theaterboulevard / Театральный бульвар (Theater boulevard) Padomju bulvāris / Бульвар Падомью (Soviet boulevard)
Riga has the widest zebra crossing in the world. Each white line is around 45 meters long. This zebra connects Freedom Monument square to Old Town, making them together as one solid pedestrian zone, because pedestrians always have first hand to cross on zebra crossings.
