Accenture is an global consulting company, which is located in so called Latvian Silicon Valley, the former VEF. Accenture has more than 300 employee, which makes it the largest IT Company in Riga.
Nowadays, the territory of the former electronics factory VEF is a home for many IT companies in Riga. Accenture, Nano Hosting, Idea Port Riga, Datartis, Interneta Pasaule and many other companies offices are located in these buildings. Therefore we can call this area as a Silicon Yard, as analogy to Silicon Valley in California :)
It happened that Riga has no Disney Land or any other amusement park like in many other big cities. So many traveling Luna Parks are often Riga guests. Usually they are being hosted at Central Station Square or next to Elkor Plaza, like this one or another one before. Check the photo of another Amusement park, which was here, at the same place 2 years ago.
Another Monthly Theme came and this time the topic is Graffiti. Again. I couldn't find quickly any really good graffiti in Riga, so I decide to put the bad one :) This type of graffiti is quite regular for Riga blocks, tunnels and industrial areas. This electric box is located inside of the former Phoenix factory territory. Check previous Graffiti Theme Photo or click here to view thumbnails for all participants.
This morning I was quite surprised to see so many people next to Nightclub Godvil. In fact it was one of the final rehearsals before New Wave song contest.
These days are burning hot in Riga. The LMT Office's thermometer is showing +35°C (95°F) It is more fun, when you look at the winter picture taken 5 months Ago in January, when it -21°C.
VEF Bank is one of 21 participants in Latvian banking system. I have never heard anything about VEF Bank. I don't know anybody who has bank account there, hence I can't say anything about it.
A huge traffic jams this morning made thousands of people delay their work. Snowstorm last night brought additional 20 centimeters of snow. Some snowdrifts are higher than 1,5 meters (5 feet)
Phoenix (also known as Fenix, Fenikss or Феникс) was the original name of RVR, the largest machine-building plant in Latvia. The factory produced electric and diesel trains, tramcars and even tanks. The first tank in the world has been assembled and tested just behind this building in 1915. The main office building is in the eclectic style and was built on Alexander Blvd in 1895. Nowadays it is the main office of Elkor company.
This night in some Riga suburbs like Airport the temperature was -27°C (-17°F), but in the center it was only -19°C (-2°F). At 9 o'clock in the morning in Teika I took this picture and it still was -21°C (-6°F). It is absolute record this winter. When it is lower than -15, the children are allowed not to go to school, so all tramways are half empty today ;) You can check weather in Riga at riga.in :)
Argus is the biggest store of electronic components in Riga. It was opened in 1993 next to VEF, the giant factory of Latvian electrical industry, which was dissolved shortly after. Since then Argus is a popular place among nerds, geeks and amateurs in electronics.
Kebab place on Barona street, just next to VEF bridge, is one of few places in Riga where you can order quite good Kebab. Kebab is very popular dish in every global city, therefore it became one of the symbols of multicultural cities.
This forgotten fountain located inside of the park of disappeared VEF factory. Tens of years ago it was full of scientists and engineers around. Nowadays VEF territory is used as office area, storing facility, car service, etc.
Passing some auto service (motor vehicle service) in VEF industrial area, I caught the smell of cooking barbecue. Have a nice lunch :) See also barbeque on the beach.
