Zaķusala (Hare Island) is the land strip washed by Daugava river in the middle of Riga. In the past Zakusala island was split into two smaller islands, which both were densely populated. Here were a lot living houses, shops, warehouses and even an hotel. Nowadays Zakusala is home for Radio and TV facilities like TV Tower and TV Center (at the background). The name of the island comes from population of hares which can be found here. By the way, foxes can be found as well :)
A perfect example of winter night in city and its colors, like blue and violet. Indigo is a color, placed exactly in the middle of blue and violet on the electromagnetic spectrum. TV Tower and TV Center are high spots of this picture.
Riga began to develop water transport. First route is served by small ship Darling. From Riga Center to Zakusala in less than 3 minutes. For the same price as bus, which takes around 25 minutes.
Kayakers training in waters between Lucavsala and Zakusala. This area is quite empty and difficult to reach, only the river police come sometimes to check what is happening :) On the background is the highest tower in EU :)
Yesterday night was remarkable for Essential Knockout 2008 music festival which took place on Zakusala Island, next to Riga TV Tower. I don't remember when Riga received so many guests having such loud names like Above & Beyond, Eric Prydz, Bodyrox, Sebastian Ingrosso, Dr. Motte (one of Love Parade Berlin founders) and others. Almost 50 DJs made the good party, but not the perfect one. Personally, I don't think that open air is good idea for latitude where Riga is. Nights are just 3-4 hours long in July. So, who does like parties by daylight? :)
Riga TV center was built together with Riga TV Tower and finished in 1987, just one year after Riga Tower. TV Center became one of the tallest buildings in Riga, nowadays activity of Latvian Television is very low, so everybody can rent small office there with their perfect Riga panoramic view. see the same TV Center building from behind.
Rīgas radio un televīzijas tornis (Riga TV and Radio Tower) is a major city sight, built in 1985 by soviet engineers. It is built on Zaķusala island, which is located in the geographic middle of Riga. Riga Tower is 2nd tallest concrete tower in Geographic Europe and 10th in the World. Observation floor is open almost everyday. By The way, it is possible to rent TV Tower for private or company party :)
