Greenhouse

Greenhouse in Riga Botanic garden. Tropic palms, cactuses and other plants, including noxious, are growing inside.
Did you know that in Latvian and Russian greenhouse is oranžērija and оранжерея, respectively. These words literally mean Orange House :) Different cultures and therefore different meaning what color should be plants in such facility :)

Actually oranzerija may probably be derived from the French "orangerie" which initially means a little orange-tree garden, like the "orangeries" of Versailles.
Those words come from a time when French permeated a lot into Russian culture ;)
Orangerie is a term used for a greenhouse all over the colder parts of Europe, not because of the colour but the fruit which in the cold climate it was only possible to over-winter in a glass-house. Nobles and the wealthy grew citrus trees there, mainly oranges, mandarines and lemons,
