Our Ladies of Victory
9th of May is the Victory Day which marks the end of The Second World War for the Soviet Union and Germany in 1945.Nowadays it isn't official holiday in Latvia, but despite this thousands of people gather by the Victory Monument in Riga. Most of them are Russians and Russian-speaking people.
Latvians don't celebrate this day, because most of them take that day as the beginning of Occupation of Latvia by USSR.

This is a nice piece of disinformation by misleading:
"Latvians don't celebrate this day, because most of them take that day as the beginning of Occupation of Latvia by USSR" - It should be noted however that (1) Latvians commemorate this event on 8th of May, just like the rest of the Europe; (2) the actual date of occupation of Latvia is June 17, 1940 (Soviet troops invade Latvia and occupy bridges, post/telephone, telegraph, and broadcasting offices). At the end of war the re-occupation or comeback of Soviets took place; (3) When celebrating 9th of May the Russian-speaking folks aforementioned, Communists and various kinds of pro-Russia extremists actually not only celebrate the Greatness of the Red Army, but also greatness of the Stalin' s USSR and de facto conquest of the Eastern Europe. Not formally of course, but it is in the air, in the speeches and in the slogans. Of course, many find it unacceptable to participate in such an event.
