Maskachka

One of the less popular areas for living in Riga is Maskachka neighborhood.
The name delivers from Maskavas iela (Moscow street), which goes through the whole hood.
One more popular nickname for this district is ghetto, because it was the only area in Riga where Jews were allowed to live during Second World War, when Riga was occupied by German Nazis.
See also the beginning of the same Moscow street.

It's such a haunting image when you read the text.
WoW! The ghetto takes on a whole different meaning in the USA! Very nice shot though!
would you add some more photos from maskavskas iela?just interesting how its looks like.If I remind once I went trough this street and there was lots of doggy people in gates and stairways.
It looks like a typical night in most cities in this country. A historical passage way to be sure.
I wonder if the street could talk it could tell us about the Nazis who paraded local citizens down this street to their death.
I assume they were citizens.
Hm, here former ghetto is like a hip district. In Cracow there's clubs & galleries next to Jewish institutions.
I must agree...that's typical night in this country.Actually a lot of streets down there looking like ghetto. That's communism relic I think.
Right now this area is very poor and depressed, but it has a great potential to become fancy neighborhood in future, exactly for the reason that because of Soviet neglect the buildings there have remained intact (though decayed) through more than half a century. Kind of a time capsule. All it needs is a good investment, lots of paint and flowers.
