The monument of Johann Gottfried Herder is located next to Riga Dome, where he used to work as teacher.
Young Herder spent in Riga 5 years and his first major works were written in Riga. The people didn't understood his new wave thinking, so he had to leave Riga, but not for ever.

BTW, name Johans Gotfrīds Herders is a good example of Latvianization. Every male name should be ended with S letter.

Interesting to see how Latvianization works. Does it apply to only people born in Latvia or also people from other countries?
Latvianization: I suppose that it's like in Lithuanian, where all names have to be ended (for men) by -as or -is or -us. If not, they cannot be declined.
So it applies also to foreigners. That's the way former french President Jacques Chirac became Zakas Cirakas !

What author calls a "Latvianization" here is a mere rules of grammar on how names should be spelled in Latvian.
Yes, it applies to all names, foreign ones too. It has nothing to do with a person "born" in Latvia or abroad. It is a general rule of grammar.
Mr. "Jacques Chirac" would be "Zaks Siraks", Ms. "Jacques Chirac" would be "Zaka Siraka".
Some ex-Soviet Russian speaking persons getting Latvian passports few years ago were extremely pissed off for having these letters appended to their names. It made headlines in media.
They claimed it "humiliates" them. They claimed it to be "nationalistic" Latvian attack on Russian speakers. Such a plain idiocy. My opinion is that then they should not be given these Latvian passports in the first place, because by complaining about it they have demonstrated their lack of understanding of basic grammar of Latvian language, which is a mandatory requirement to get citizenship.
But of course, that was just a populist fuss, used by Left wing Russian Nationalist groups (like PCTVL (ЗаПЧЕЛ) party) for political gain.
One of my internet friends who is south African, was busted by the Latvian police, (more then likely because they thought he was a rich foreigner who could pay a big bribe).
Any how the Latvianization of his name was very interesting. So does any one want to have a go at mine?
