It was opened in the former bank's building at Krisjana Barona and Elizabetes crossroads, which was built in 1910
Nowadays the premises and not enough and the library will be moved to the new building in Autumn of 2012. Check here for the latest photos of construction works and live webcam.

But Riga really need a big and new lybrary?
I still remember last year, going from my house to the french bar, all nights crossing that street, going through my favourite park, and seeing the freedom monument. I am going to cry
Raffale, there are some many discussion regarding this topic :D
Raffaelle - but of course it needs - and not only Riga, it's whole Latvia's National library. Latvia is the only state in EU which hasn't modern national library, there are more than 6 mio books and print works in it's funds, that has to be preserved in adequate conditions, and also people should have normal and comfortable access to them. The only question could be - do we really need that expensive and luxurious new building? And I would still answer - yes, as I'm for good and great buildings, not some cheap, only functional crap.
I respect your point of view.I can understand to preserve old books and have a good librrary. That's right!! But in center there are many beautiful, ancients, big building where are abandons.Renovate them was more cheper and fast too! It'd be nice to read old books in ancient renovate building and more confortable access for more people Just coz its in center. It's right to preserve first ancient building and show to turist how beautiful is Riga. This is the real charm of Riga. Really I couldn't image that that big "ship" could be even a new library.
