The monument of Ilyushin Il-28 military aircraft is located in a small village Skulte, 100 meters next to
RIX.
Skulte was a closed military area before 1993, which was home for 27th division of Soviet Air Defence Forces.
People living in this area were also serving the
Anti-Aircraft base in Marupe.

Jaunmārupe is a small place next to Riga. It was formed in 1970s as collective farm.
Nowadays it is a satellite town of Riga, which basically has nothing to see, except this futuristic
water tower.

Mārupe (
Mara's river) is one of the Riga's satellite towns, located at the south-west border, next to
Airport.
Town was founded in 1925 and named after
river of almost the same name
Nowadays Marupe has reputation as an area for families with mid-high income. Total population is 5,500 people.
Also it is one of the most fast growing towns in Latvia, total population has been increased more than in 3 times for the last 10 years.

Anti-Aircraft defense base is located in Marupe. It has some strange constructions and of course radars.
It was built during Soviet times in order to protect airspace over Riga and surroundings.
Taking close-up pictures is forbidden because the
military base is still operating.

Mārupes ūdenstornis (
Marupe Water tower) was built in 2002. The tower's height is 58 meters, hence it is the most tallest building in Marupe.
Shortly after being built the Water tower became the most recognizable reference point in the whole area.
