Riga 2013

According to my own tradition, every August, when Riga celebrates its birthday, I do collect stats about Riga's population to see how well the city lives.
In my understanding, the population is the main factor of economic and cultural activity of the cities.
So, please check below the statistics for the recent 3 years and the most recent change:

Region201320122011Diff from
12 to 13
Riga City696,618699,203706,413-0.37%
Riga Metro1,018,2951,081,1371,098,523-5.81%
Latvia2,041,7632,217,0532,245,357-7.91%

As long as I publish those stats I see decrease in Riga's population and it seems that there are no plans or support by government to inverse that trend.

Riga 2012

Sad news, Riga became 1 year older and since today Riga is 811 years old officially.
Although this year City Festival was celebrating 730 years since Riga joined Hanseatic League.
Why this is sad news? 1 year ago I've been forecasting that Riga's population will go under 700,000 in a few years, but it happened earlier.
Here below are statistics and changes:

Region20122011Change
Riga699,203706,413-1.02%
Riga Metro1,081,1371,098,523-1.58%
Latvia2,217,0532,245,357-1.26%

Riga 810

Riga 810
Last weekend Riga officially became 1 year older, and its technical age is 810 years!
A massive celebration was held around the city 3 days in a row. Many subevents, like medieval fights, air show and of course fireworks could be observed in Riga these days.

I would like to continue my tradition and provide here some numbers to describe Riga's "growth".
The city mayor is still Nil Ushakov, but according current tendency, soon there will be no city, but just a settlement.
During the last year Riga population went down from 709,145 to 706,413 residents (-2,732); simple calculation still proves that after a couple of years Riga will have less than 700,000 residents.

Riga region population (including other cities) is 1,098,523. No changes because of new expanded borders.

I really don't understand how, but the picture of Latvia population is getting better. The growth is +27,388 or +1,23% of people (from 2,217,969 to 2,245,357)

Check also stats for 2009 and 2010.

City Festival

City Festival
Rīgas svētki (Riga Festival) is always being held in the end of August each year. Tens of locations, hundreds of events and thousands of people are taking part in this huge celebration of Riga birthday.
In order to continue my own tradition, here below are some figures to describe Riga's growth.
During the last year Riga population went down from 713,016 to 709,145 people (-3,871); simple calculation proves that after 3 years Riga will have less than 700,000 residents :(
Riga district population (including cities inside) has decreased from 942,002 to 937,864 (-4,138)
And the picture of Latvia population is even worse. The huge drop is -43,325 or -1,92% of people (from 2,261,294 to 2,217,969)

As usually, good night photo is provided by F64.

Pasažieru Osta - 1000th Photo

Pasazieru Osta
2,5 years ago Riga Daily Photo was started with the picture of Vana Tallinn ferry departing from Riga Harbour. 500th post was marked with photo of another ferry - Regina Baltica.
I didn't want to break the tradition, so the second anniversary was with photo of Festival taking the Sea.
Now it's time to expose Rīgas pasažieru osta (Riga Passenger Terminal) itself and the reason is that this picture is the 1000th photo!

Just imagine, 1000 photos of Riga! Riga Daily Photo is my longest hobby ever, which is still making me happy :)
Although difficult times came and I don't have a good camera anymore, hence I have to take pictures with a low-end old digital camera. So if you like this blog, please support it by making a small donation for a new camera.
Thanks anyway, my beloved visitors and readers :)

Riga, New York

Riga, New York
Just few Rigans know that word Riga stands not only for the capital of Latvia, but it is also name for some cities, towns and other places around the world.
Today it is exactly 201 year since Riga town was formed in the state of New York in United States of America. Nowadays Riga, NY is a small town with population of 6,000 people.
I hope one day I will take a plane to New York and take these pictures by myself, but for now I am sending big thanks for photos to Art and Jim from Riga, NY

I Love Riga Photos - Theme

5 years passed since monsieur Eric Tenin started his Paris Daily Photo, the very first City Daily Photo blog.
In fact I was inspired not only by Paris, but also by Brain's New York, which was started on 17 March 2006.
Today's Photo is a tribute to celebrate 5 years anniversary and the theme is the Tenin Technique.
Eric's photo I love PDP inspired me to use the Tenin's Technique. Do not forget to view all participants.

McDonald's Birthday

McDonald's Cake
15 years ago first Riga McDonald's was officially opened. At that time it was one of the prestigious places to eat. Since then I am regular client of that fast food place. I simply enjoy these always warm and tasty burgers :)
Being teenager I used to work in McDonald's as well, luckily not for a long time. Actually, after that I couldn't eat in McDonald's several months because I just got knew how and from what food is being prepared.

Cruise ferry Festival
Today is a birthday of riga.in :) 2 years have passed since Riga Daily Photo was started. Wow, we are taking the sea! :)
A lot of work has been done - about 750 photos were published, first appearance in press, transfer to new domain.
And there are still many ideas and things to do in order to improve riga.in and get this photoblog to even higher level.
For example, I will tell you a little secret, in a few days riga.in will have a brand new stylish smart design :)

Of course all of this take tons of resources. In fact riga.in is not created to make any money hence it is nonprofit project, but on this very special day if you want to help to riga.in, then you are very welcome to make a small gift :)

Prieka and Будем! (Cheers!)

Zebra Day

Zebra Crossing Birthday
Today is the 60th birthday of Zebra Crossing. Can you imagine? :)
Not many Rigans knows that zebra on Aspazijas blvd between Kalku and Brivibas is unique because of its width.
On the photos is depicted a kind of flash mob. People gathered next to our famous zebra to chalk some greeting writings.

Guest photographer is Zigurds Zakis.

Blondes girls dance on bar
Kaļķu vārti is one of my favourite night clubs in Riga. Sometimes there is a spontaneous performance by regular visitors.
Obviously the club is located on Kalku iela, just next to Mad House ;)
