Today I was driving through Kliversala area and noticed that the old Tsar-style police department is being demolished...
It was the very first PD in Riga on the right coast of Daugava river.
I was hoping this eclectic building will be given a second chance to like museum or something else, but it is not.
My second panoramic photo (please use horizontal scrollbar to see the whole picture) of the abandoned border-crossing point between Latvia and Lithuania called Būtingė - Rucava, which was visited during my trip to Nida.
This is a Latvia's exit point, therefore the last photo of this trip in this blog. Please check next photo at Klaipeda at my Vilnius' blog or go back to Liepaja
Vārpa was one of the Riga breweries located at Maskavas iela. It was operating since 1898 till 2003 when brewery went bankruptcy because of strong competition. Nowadays this building is abandoned and standing empty.
There are a lot of old warehouses around Central Market. Some of them were rebuilt and still are being in use, some of them became night clubs or even art galleries. But some structures were never renovated and nowadays look like ruins of Ancient Rome.
Not very old, but abandoned house on Kuģu iela (Ship street), which goes next to Daugava river. Along with with abandoned buildings at Kugu iela like this one or Police Dept (Kugu iela 15), here are a lot of fancy building e.g. Kugu iela 26, Radisson Blu (Kugu iela 24), or Kugu iela 11.
Убежище (shelter) built in Dünamünde fortress. The shelter was designed to protect military personnel against enemy attacks from the air. In fact it is almost invisible from the areal view.
This wooden house is inhabited for many years, but still it is remarkable example of Riga architecture of 19th century. Located just some hundreds meters from Central Market.
Formerly this building was a gorgeous hotel in Jurmala. After the big fire in late 90s, hotel has been left untouched. Nice rooms with view towards Baltic Sea, beautiful outskirts, just 50 meters to the sea.
By the way, do not forget to send greetings to your mother. Today is the Mother's Day in Latvia :)
This red brick house is the former Police department of Zemgales borough.
This building was especially built for Police Service during Russian Empire times.
During Soviet epoch it was residence of Militsiya of Riga Leninsky District.
Dept moved to the new place more than 10 years ago and since then this nice building left abandoned.
UPDATE: In 2017 the building was destroyed.
Lauksaimniecības mašīnu rūpnīca (Agricultural Machinery Factory) had being closed down since Soviet Union collapse. Now is being demolished part by part, building by building.
This building stands like this for at least 10 years. A great design and location, but nobody is reparing it. It could be a prestigious apartments. It is just next to Swedbank Building.
I don't know what is written on top of this going to ruin building - some1 or somer :) But this someone did a venturesome job :)
I found Guntis (54) boiling potatoes on Akmenu street, next to LNB future building. He reluctantly told his tragic story.. Briefly, tens years ago his wife has gone to another man, but Guntis stayed to live in house legally belonging to wife.. After years all houses near to future building of LNB were demolished and legal owners got some compensation. Of course his wife didn't even think to share the compensation with her ex-husband Guntis, who lived there for more than 30 years :(
- Don't hit, I am already beaten.. I found this bomzh or bomj (bum) (with Rolex on his left hand) in a stairway of my house late night. He was sleeping on the floor and has bled all beneath him. When it is cold outside, Riga bums often get into basements or garrets of apartment buildings, but I really dislike when they stink next to me.
One of the most criminal and poorest neighborhoods in Riga is Maskachka. Maskachka is shortening from Maskavas Forštate (Moscow suburb). It's named like this because of road connecting Riga to Moscow. Today it is mostly undeveloped area with prewar buildings and narrow cobblestone-covered streets. Junkies, bums and poor people make here the highest crime rate in Riga.
